Because the legs are well below the heart, blood has to flow in an upward direction through the leg veins. To make sure that this blood doesn’t flow back downwards, the legs have one-way valves (non-return) in them. When these valves fail to function properly, venous blood stagnation occurs, as some of the blood will keep flowing back downwards and pooling of blood occurs in the veins, causing symptoms over a period of time in different stages. Ultimately, the sequence of the events is reflected as swelling in the lower limbs, itching and skin discolouration, superficial recurrent ulceration and chronic deep nonhealing ulcerations.

Varicose Vein is a not a disease.
